![]() Outback road adventure
State: Northern Territory
Operator: Wayoutback Minimum Price: AUD $ 725 For the adventure traveller, the 'Breakaway' is the ultimate 4WD 5 day safari. As would be expected, we'll see Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), Watarrka (Kings Canyon), Palm Valley and the West MacDonnell Ranges. More importantly, we'll also get to truly experience the outback in an authentic way by going 'wayoutback' through 2 Cattle Stations, using bush tracks that only we have access to use. After experiencing the magic of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), we go on a mind blowing 4WD expedition to Watarrka (Kings Canyon) through two outback Cattle Stations, Curtin Springs and Kings Creek. Between the two they total more than 6,300 square kilometers. Wayoutback is the only tour company using this direct route, negotiating over 130km of bush tracks through places only a few Aboriginals, early settlers and station workers have seen. This is a chance to really absorb the expanse and beauty of the Australian outback. Our experienced guides have all the required bush skills to keep you safe and comfortable. They are among the best in Central Australia because of their enthusiasm and ability to bring people together to have the best time. This is backed up with extensive local knowledge of land, people and history. DAY 1 (Lunch & Dinner) After picking you up from your accommodation in Alice Springs bright and early at 5.45am, there's time for tea or coffee on top of Anzac Hill and to watch the sunrise over Alice while we finalise ticketing. The first part of the day is spent driving to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park with a few stops along the way for refreshments, a camel ride and a chance to purchase some Aboriginal paintings or artifacts. We break for lunch at our bush camp, situated amongst desert oak trees at the base of a large sand dune within the Resort. The afternoon is devoted to enjoying the sights of Uluru (Ayers Rock), including a full base walk or a chance to climb if you wish. We'll also visit the Cultural Centre where you can learn about the Tjukurpa (Aboriginal law/religion). It's now time to view the magnificent sunset on Uluru accompanied with a glass or two of sparkling wine before retiring to the campsite for a delicious meal, a couple of drinkies and time to sit back to contemplate the day's events.
DAY 2 (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) After watching the sunrise over Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) from a lookout close to our campsite, it's breakfast and off to Kata Tjuta for an 8km hike through the magnificent Valley of the Winds. After a leisurely lunch and a stop at the Resort for fuel and supplies, we head to Curtin Springs Cattle Station. Arriving in the mid afternoon there's plenty of opportunity to get a close look at Atila (Mt Connor) with a Mt Connor Sunset Tour +. Our campsite at Curtin Springs is miles from the crowds, which is where the feeling of 'Wayoutback' really starts to take hold. After a campfire dinner it's time to kick back and be mesmerised by the millions of stars on display.
DAY 3 (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) After breakfast it's time to lock in the wheel hubs and 4WD across bush tracks no other tour can take you. We'll travel north through Curtin Springs to Kings Creek Station, covering some of the most beautiful and unspoilt country you're ever likely to see. We are now truly 'WAYOUTBACK', meandering through country seen by only a privileged few. On arrivalat Kings Creek we head off to Watarrka (Kings Canyon). We do a full 8km rim walk of this absolutely stunning place before a light snack and a swim in the Garden of Eden rock pool. Back at Kings Creek you have the rare opportunity to take control of a quad bike and explore some of the more secluded areas of Kings Creek Station on one of their sunset tours +. It's then off to relax and enjoy the evening at our remote bush camp set in beautiful surroundings overlooking the George Gill Ranges.
DAY 4 (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) Departing the area, we head along the Mereenie Loop Road toward Hermannsburg, a Lutheran mission established in 1877. After a stop at the local store for refreshments it's off to Palm Valley, 4 wheel driving down a typical outback dirt road. Here we can take in the beauty and ruggedness of the area with a walk along the Finke River, the oldest watercourse on the planet. We're then off to Redbank Gorge for our last night's bush camp.
DAY 5 (Breakfast & Lunch) An early start and we're then off to what many believe is the jewel in the crown of Central Australia, Redbank Gorge. After lots of swimming and relaxing we make our way back to Alice Springs travelling through the West MacDonnell Ranges. We'll have you back in Alice early evening and meet later for a few more quiet drinkies and to farewell new found friends.
